Hulas’ new electric car model put to road test

Aug 8, 2016- Hulas Motors, a subsidiary of Golchha Organisation, has started field testing of its new electric car model named "Da Vinci".

The company is currently testing the prototypes in Kathmandu and hilly areas. It said the car will be priced at around Rs1.4 million, without divulging the launch date.

Hulas Motors Manager Prafulla Chandra Das said the cars are locally assembled, with parts imported from China.

The vehicle, which can accommodate five passengers, comes with features such as air conditioning, power lock, power steering, power windows and reverse camera, among others, according to the company.

Das said the company is holding talks with government authorities for support, seeking subsidy on customs and excise duties in particular. "If the government subsidies the taxes, the car will be even cheaper," he said.

Hulas Motors has been manufacturing three- and four-wheelers since 1994. In 2015, it ended production of its famous "Mustang Max" jeep—which was used by former Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai as his official vehicle—after it failed to meet pollution standards.

Das said the company had no option but to stop the production after the government refused to give it adequate time to upgrade the vehicle to Euro-3 standards. "The government authority refused to extend the deadline although were planning to upgrade to Euro-3," he said.

The company also produced a light commercial vehicle named "Hulas Sherpa" until 2002.

The Electric Van From Hell Just Took Down A BMW i8 And A Dodge Viper

Drag racing a vehicle with 900 horsepower and immediate torque off the line is bad news, as the drivers of the BMW i8 and Dodge Viper in this video found out. Turns out electric cars are really, really fast in a straight line. We already knew that, but it's nice to get another fun reminder.

China Billionaires Chasing Electric-Car Talent Power Salaries

(Bloomberg) -- China's biggest iPhone maker, largest e-commerce company and leading internet-video producer are all in the hunt to build electric cars -- and to grab the small pool of available talent to build them.

All of this is great news for marketing professional Ronan Lu, 32. The bidding wars see some workers earning double their peers' salaries and others landing jobs with minimal experience, according to recruiters.

"Many companies offered me job opportunities with good payment, but I chose LeEco because I believe it has great potential," said Lu, who left Toyota Motor Corp. to join LeEco's auto division in Beijing last month. "Startup EV companies usually can offer a higher salary than traditional automakers. You can get good rewards from stock holdings in such companies."

More than 200 Chinese companies -- with backers including Terry Gou, Ma Huateng, Jack Ma and Jia Yueting -- are developing 4,000 models of new-energy vehicles and unveiling prototypes at motor shows and home-electronics expos. Traditional automakers and a bevy of startups see opportunity in the government's commitment to boost yearly sales of NEVs by a factor of 10 in the next decade.

China surpassed the U.S. last year to become the world's biggest market for new-energy vehicles, a fleet comprising electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell cars. Domestic automakers sold 331,092 units in 2015, according to the state-backed China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

In a country with some of the worst urban air pollution on the planet and a rapidly urbanizing populace, the government has set a sales target of 3 million units a year by 2025. China also is accelerating construction of charging stations to serve 5 million electric vehicles by 2020.

'Prying Talents'

"Internet companies that want to make cars are prying talents from us, and other rival automakers are also trying to lure them away," said Wang Jun, vice president of Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. "It's not only bolstered human-resource costs but also changed people's expectations about their future."

The positions in top demand include designers, software developers and engineers focusing on systems architecture and creating "smart cities," said Shirley Xia, an auto-industry recruiter in Beijing for Aimsen & Company.

Recently, Xia and seven colleagues suspended all projects for 45 days to search for an engineer to design charging poles for electric vehicles. Their client, an auto parts maker, wanted someone with at least three years of experience but settled for a candidate with half that.

"For some positions that only emerged over the past couple of years, there aren't that many talents in the market," Xia said. "It's challenging for us to find candidates."

Salaries for key research-and-development workers have risen 30 percent this year, with some reaching 1 million yuan ($151,000), said Jennifer Feng, chief human resource expert at Shanghai-based 51job Inc. That's almost 16 times the national average for urban Chinese, based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

DeLorean Doors

Park Piao left Changan Automobile to run the R&D department for startup Zhiche Auto in Shanghai. Zhiche's chief executive officer is Shen Haiyin, who formerly worked for Chinese e-commerce company 360.com.

"I received quite a lot of offers from all kinds of companies before I decided to join Zhiche," said Piao, 38. "A startup company can be more focused on EV products and thus can achieve innovations more quickly."

Zhiche displayed a concept electric SUV before the Beijing Auto Show this year, complete with DeLorean-style doors that flip up. Zhiche plans to release the car next year.

There's also strong demand for branding and marketing specialists to help make household names out of startups with sights on initial public offerings.

Foxconn, Tencent

"Part of this EV startup bubble can be explained by hot money," said Jochen Siebert, managing director of JSC Automotive Consulting in Singapore. "It reminds me a bit of the 1990s, when almost everything with internet or e-commerce was supported by private equity, and the stocks went through the roof."

A lot of that money is being spent on recruiting for the corporate suite, with companies backed by some of Greater China's richest people hiring top executives from rivals and from Silicon Valley to help distinguish themselves.

Take Future Mobility Corp., an EV-maker backed by Gou's Foxconn Technology Group and Ma's Tencent Holdings Ltd. The company hired Daniel Kirchert, who was president of Dongfeng Infiniti Motor Co., and Carsten Breitfeld, project manager for BMW AG's i8 plug-in sports car. Then it lured more managers from BMW.

"It is such a huge opportunity and advantage to start from zero," Kirchert said. "Our company offers a really big platform for talented people to reach their goals without hitting the glass ceilings they would have hit at traditional automakers."

Tesla Challengers

Internet entrepreneur William Li's NextEV Inc. hired Padmasree Warrior, Cisco Systems Inc.'s former technology chief, to lead its U.S. operations.

Jia's Faraday Future Inc., an electric-car startup planning a $1 billion factory in Nevada to challenge Elon Musk and his Tesla Motors Inc., recruited Porter Harris from Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Harris left Faraday earlier this year.

The presence of those high profiles usually attracts workers who can actually build cars. Only about a quarter of the 4,000-plus NEVs approved by the government are in production, according to a National Development and Reform Commission survey. Ma's Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is partnering with SAIC Motor Corp. on an internet-connected SUV called the Roewe RX5.

Yet public subsidies that can total 60 percent of an EV's sticker price are helping fuel a manufacturing boom. For the first half of this year, China produced 177,000 NEVs, more than double the same period a year ago, the manufacturers' association said.

"Talent is one of many things these EV startups need to get right," Robin Zhu, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Sanford C Bernstein, said in an e-mail. "It may even be the most important, given how early stage many are at this point, and particularly given the realities of fund raising (investors back the best people)."

Tesla, Watch Out: Mercedes-Benz Gearing Up To Unveil Electric Vehicle Fleet Based On 'Completely New Architecture'

Mercedes-Benz plans to become a strong rival to Tesla Motors and BMW, in an attempt to prove that green cars have the potential to become profitable.

Two insiders from the company, who requested to stay anonymous, reported that Mercedes has plans to roll out an entirely new line of EV vehicles, featuring two sedans and two electric sport utility vehicles.

The carmaker did not decide on the name of its sub-brand of EV cars, according to the sources.

Dieter Zetsche, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz's parent company, Daimler, stated earlier this year that his company will showcase an electric car in September, at the Paris Motor Show.

The push towards EV autos comes in the wake of the tremendous success of the Model S sedan, built by Tesla. Germany's luxury-market leaders feel pressured to demonstrate that their engineers can craft electric innovations on par with those from their American counterparts. The fact that the global consensus shows low-pollution vehicles are the only way to build cars in the future is another motivational factor for Mercedes's plans.

However, the home market of Mercedes shied away from purchasing a large number of EV cars due to extensive charging times, rather short driving range and comparatively high prices of the autos.

The car manufacturer had several attempts to pack electric motors and batteries to its existing designs, which is a more cost-effective approach than what BMW did with its entirely new line of "i" EV cars.

The two companies recently switched their strategies, as BMW says its next "i" model will roll out five years from now.

According to one insider from Mercedes, the company will begin selling its electric lineup before 2020.

Mercedes might feel optimistic about the future of EV sales, at least by looking at how rival BMW is faring. According to BMW, its latest i3 model pushed its number of eco-friendly sales up by 87 percent in the first half of 2016.

Mercedes confirmed its plans to Engadget.

"We are working on a large EV with a range between 400 and 500km (250-310 miles) based on a completely new architecture," said Mercedes.

To make matters even more interesting, rumors surfaced that electric variants of Smart city-cars are also in tow.

On the other end of the car size spectrum, Daimler's helm of trucks, Wolfgang Bernhard, notes that he is confident that a window of opportunity is opening "to earn money in e-mobility." The company is gunning after in-city deliveries with its recent Urban eTruck prototype. Insiders from the company also hint that semi-automated, electric city buses are a promising part of Mercedes' future plans.

Bremen Factory

The automaker said that the manufacturing of the new electric autos will take place at the facility in Bremen, Germany.

Starting in 2017, a fuel-cell electric GLC SUV should be in manufacturing stage, and the car is expected to be able to tap both hydrogen and wall sockets for recharging.

Insiders familiar with the matter point out that Mercedes' new line will feature a unique, distinct design to make its EV cars highly recognizable.

This is not the company's first foray into green cars, but previous attempts brought mixed results. Because of high costs and lackluster refueling network, the fuel-cell version of the B-Class scored very little success with customers.

Aside from the B250e, which is still a low-volume, special-order vehicle, Mercedes offers the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive to environmentally conscious drivers.

Mercedes preparing electric cars lineup, taking on Tesla, BMW

Mercedes Benz is reportedly planning to roll out a fleet of electric cars, as it prepares to take on the likes of Tesla and BMW. Mercedes said earlier this year that it plans to unveil an electric car at the upcoming 2016 Paris Motor Show. In addition to the EV concept, the Stuttgart-based company is also developing two electric SUVs and two sedans.

The electric vehicles market is continue to evolve and grow, as Tesla is struggling to build manufacturing capacity to fulfill orders for the Model 3. BMW is also working on new electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, starting with a rumored i5 crossover.

When speaking with Autocar in May, Ola Källenius, Head of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes, said that the Stuttgart-based brand would not be creating a specific sub-brand for alternative fuel technologies for the foreseeable future. "We could choose for the purpose-made electric vehicles to create some sort of sub-brand but, right now, Mercedes is focused on investing tremendous resources into the path towards zero emissions. It's something that will affect the whole portfolio."

At the moment, Mercedes-Benz is looking to increase its entire lineup's use of alternative fuel and zero-emissions technologies. Mercedes also wants to have the widest plug-in hybrid lineup in the industry.

Currently, the only electric car that Mercedes-Benz has to offer is the B Class, but the brand will also be adding two Smart cars to that by the end of this year. Mercedes will be looking to add more and more zero-emission models to the range, including a fuel-cell vehicle based on the GLC platform by the end of next year. BMW is also working on a fuel-cell vehicle in collaboration with Toyota.

Report: Mercedes plans sub-brand for new electric cars

Mercedes-Benz plans to launch a handful of electric cars over the coming years to counter models already offered by Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA], as well as newcomers from its fellow German rivals Audi and BMW.

The first of these electric cars are to include a pair of sedans and a pair of SUVs, and Mercedes will preview at least one of them in concept form in late September at the 2016 Paris auto show. They are expected to start arriving on the market before the end of the decade.

Based on its sources, Bloomberg is reporting that Mercedes will follow the lead of BMW and establish a sub-brand for its new electric cars. However, the sources said a name for the sub-brand is yet to be determined. Mercedes already offers some electric cars like the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive and B-Class Electric Drive, but these are sold under the regular brands.

Establishing a sub-brand is a risky move for Mercedes which has suffered major losses with Smart, as well as Maybach back when it was a standalone brand. BMW's own i sub-brand has failed to make a major impact, though it could be due to the limited performance of the cars compared to the competition as well as their somewhat radical styling.

Mercedes' new electric cars are expected to feature a level of sophistication comparable to or superior to the automaker's existing cars. They are also promised to have a range of 300 miles or more, though stricter EPA ratings may see a lower figure stated for the United States.

The cars will ride on a "skateboard" style platform where the batteries are stored in the floor and an electric motor is mounted at one or both axles. The platform, which was previewed in June, will be flexible enough to spawn multiple models.

As for batteries, Mercedes plans to produce its own. They will be produced by fellow Daimler subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive, which already offers home energy storage in some markets and is currently expanding its factory in preparation for the new electric cars.

Note, these electric cars are separate to the electric commercial vehicles also being developed by Mercedes, such as the electric truck previewed by the Urban eTruck concept.

Developers across the country are taking into account the changing habits of their wealthy buyers, including a shift to electric cars.

In South Florida, a number of luxury condo developers are including charging stations as amenities, including Mast Capital, Ugo Colombo and Verzasca Group.

At 3900 Alton in Miami Beach, Mast Capital is incorporating multiple electric car charging stations and a "Tesla house car" that will take residents to and from the project's beach club, according to the Wall Street Journal's Mansion Global. The eight-story condo building, designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, is slated to be completed in 2018.

Developers are banking on the rise in electric car use amid predictions that sales of electric cars will represent 35 percent of worldwide car sales by 2040, the Journal said, citing a Bloomberg study. Battery prices are also expected to fall.

Louver House, also a Mast Capital project, will have six electric vehicle charging stations for 12 units.

Over in Bay Harbor Islands, Verzasca Group is offering its buyers charging spots for residents of Pearl House and Le Jardin. Others in Miami-Dade include Palazzo del Sol on Fisher Island; Yoo at Metropica, developed by Joseph Kavana; Ugo Colombo's Brickell Flatiron and Blue Jay Capital's 121 Marina. [WSJ] – Katherine Kallergis
