Ecotricity introducing £5 fee for electric car drivers to use charging points

The allotted 20 minutes of charging is enough to fill most electric cars by around 50%, but the range this gives varies massively depending on the vehicle being charged.

Until now, electric vehicle owners who use Ecotricity's charging stations have been able to charge up their cars for free.

Ecotricity said it will offer electric auto owners a rapid charge of up to 20 minutes at a cost of £5, where previously the service was entirely free across its entire network.

The fee will not apply to Tesla owners who use the company's own Supercharger network, however the electric-car poster child has also suggested it will start charging drivers to charge in the future.

A new app will replace the current card system, which will be available for Apple and Android devices and will enable users to manage their accounts, pay for charging and check the status of chargers all in one place, Ecotricity said.

Some 38,000 motorists are registered to access Ecotricity's 296 charging points across the UK. At that time, the UK's electric vehicle market was still very small - the sales of "alternatively fuelled vehicles", which includes electric cars and hybrid vehicles, accounted for just 1.3% of the UK's auto market in 2011, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). In 2015, that figure was 2.8%.

The fee is for a 20-minute charge and is set to be introduced along the company's 300 rapid-charging stations across the country.

Ecotricity was founded in July 2011 and planned to rid the United Kingdom of the electric car's chicken-and-egg problem, whereby no one would buy a vehicle until there was a charging network, and a charging network would not be built until people bought electric cars.

He added that a payment system was being introduced to support the growth of the network, which will remain free for Ecotricity domestic energy customers.

Electric Highway chargers are now said to be across 96 per cent of the British motorway network and that 38,537 customers hold Electric Highway cards used in operating an electric auto charger.
