Continental has developed an electric drive for China in anticipation of an electric-vehicle boom in the world's largest car market.

The German automotive supplier said it will introduce the compact, cost-effective, and high-performance system at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

The drive, which will combine an electric motor, transmission and power electronics in a single unit, is scalable and can generate power in a range of 60 to 120 kW.

Bernd Mahr, who heads Continental's Hybrid Electric Vehicle business unit, said the drive's relatively low weight and competitive pricing are key features. "This makes it fun to drive, which is an important factor in the acceptance of electric mobility," he said in a press statement.

Electric vehicle sales have been slow to take off worldwide, but Continental cited expert predictions that EVs and hybrid-electric vehicles are set to grow their global market share from 4 pc today to 20 pc by 2025. China's expected strong overall growth is likely to trigger more demand for EVs there as well.
