Ford unveils 1st gasoline-electric hybrid

General Motors (GM) wants to launch 10 electric and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles in China by 2020 as a result of the government pressure on the auto industry to promote gasoline alternatives, the Associated Press reports.

GM would start production of a pure-electric model in China within two years, according to Matt Tsien, president of GM China, who spoke at a news conference during the Shanghai auto show.

Volvo's first all-electric auto was earlier said to be built on the same platform, which underpins the Volvo S90.

High start-up costs and other hurdles in the fledgling car-share industry mean no one is making money yet, analysts say. It has precious little to do with the original "MG Cars" company, and its only products in the United Kingdom are the sorta OK MG3 supermini, and the sorta OK MG GS crossover.

These plans included a prediction that by 2020, the majority of VW sales in China would be of electric or hybrid vehicles, through partnerships with local firms as well as ride-hailing pioneer Didi.

A few years ago, GM executives frequently emphasized the need to increase Chevy's sales globally, with a special focus on China.

Lincoln said the MKZ will go on sale this year in China starting at 329,800 yuan ($47,900). The Cabinet's planning agency announced a goal in February of having 100,000 public charging stations and 800,000 private stations operating by the end of this year.

Electric cars also are exempt from sales tax and license plate quotas Beijing, Shanghai and other cities use to curb congestion and smog.

But whatever the new EV from Volvo is, it's a major step on the route to Volvo's target of a million electrified Volvos by 2025.
