Hyundai Motor plans to start selling the hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) versions of the Ioniq during the third quarter, followed by the launch of its plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) version during the first half of next year. The Hyundai Ioniq is the world's first vehicle that will be offered with three electrified powertrains - conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric. We like that Hyundai didn't go berserk with the styling and instead offered a logical setup with buttons and knobs were you expect them to be.
The Ioniq Hybrid comes with a 43.5-horsepower electric motor that is powered by a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The engine has been tailored to the hybrid application and is combined with the direct responding, smooth shifting six-speed double clutch transmission. This engine pairs with a 42.9-horsepower electric motor to develop a total output of 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.
Hyundai Motor today announced Project IONIQ, a long-term research and development project that will redefine future mobility through innovation, enhancing the lives of Hyundai customers and wider society. Like the hybrid, the plug-in variant also carries the same 1.6 litre GDI kappa petrol engine. It gets a 28.0-kWh battery, which is estimated to be good for more than 155 miles of range.
The cars on the stand in Geneva featured a large central touchscreen in the dashboard with the promise of integration with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Furthermore, the driving experience becomes digital through the 7-inch TFT instrument cluster displaying all key driver information. Safety features include autonomous emergency braking, the lane keep assist system, blind spot detection, smart cruise control and rear cross traffic alert.
